Welcome to My Michigan (The Mitten)
I took a fifteen year break from photography to spend as much time as possible with my family. Now that the kids are out of school and I find myself with more free time I have decided to join the digital age and pick up where I left off.
For me photography is a labor of love. It helps me see everything in a new light and a new way. Everyday events become forever memories. Insects, flowers, animals and birds become magical and mystical. My eyes see a whole new world around me, sometimes alien but always beautiful. This is what I love to do, winter, spring, summer and fall, immersed in the great out of doors with a camera in my hand.
Come and join me on my expeditions. And just maybe, like many others, you will come away "Smitten by the Mitten".
Thank you for stopping by.
Jim

Just a couple of warm days and these will burst into bloom.
Thought I would play around with a narrow Depth of Field (DOF).

I visited the Maple River Flooding (SGA) yesterday. It was pretty much all Canadian Geese and a few Sandhill Cranes. I love trying to capture the beauty of birds as they fly. This almost looks like three photos of one bird layered into one but it is three flying together. They are so awesome.

I thought I would add one more.

This Hooded Merganser managed to keep warm and a cold spring day. There was a group of six busy catching one fish after another.

This is the first time I have ever seen a Red Bellied Woodpecker showing off like this. Too bad the back lighting was so harsh.

I decided to take a quick drive and check out the open water by Potter Park Zoo. Birders have been seeing interesting waterfowl there all winter, a Coot, Black Duck and Lesser Scaup along with the usual Mallards and Geese. I was a little surprised to see this fellow fishing in the shallows.

I thought I would try to photograph the comet two nights in a row but Mother Nature had other plans. As I was returning home I stopped by the sheep barns thinking I might find a photo op to salvage the day. This is what I came up with.

Finally got a break and the skies cleared. I could not find the comet so I took a few pics where I thought it was and this is what I came up with.

Found this branch bobbing up and down in the water. This is the ice sculpture that was formed. Mother Nature is quite the artist.

Finally took the time to get the kayak out of the garage. Went down to the Grand River upstream from Onondaga. I saw a couple of Robins, a dozen Brown Creepers and a couple dozen Bluebirds. I also saw my first Wood Duck of the year. Here are two of the best shots from today.

These dudes have been hanging out on south campus for a few weeks and I was finally able to catch up with them today and capture them. What a winter treat! This is a Snow Bunting and a Horned Lark.

This is a female Lesser Scaup. She is number 202 on my lifetime list!

It took me two days and 6 hours in the cold to finally see the Townsend's Solitaire that has been hanging out at Fenner Arboretum. This was a very good day!
