Welcome to My Michigan (The Mitten)
I took a fifteen year break from photography to spend as much time as possible with my family. Now that the kids are out of school and I find myself with more free time I have decided to join the digital age and pick up where I left off.
For me photography is a labor of love. It helps me see everything in a new light and a new way. Everyday events become forever memories. Insects, flowers, animals and birds become magical and mystical. My eyes see a whole new world around me, sometimes alien but always beautiful. This is what I love to do, winter, spring, summer and fall, immersed in the great out of doors with a camera in my hand.
Come and join me on my expeditions. And just maybe, like many others, you will come away "Smitten by the Mitten".
Thank you for stopping by.
Jim

I was waiting for the right clouds to take an IR photo of the tree on the South Campus at MSU. Saturday was almost perfect. Here is an image after swapping the red and blue channels,

and converting to black and white.

Today I finally got a chance to go kayaking again. I was excited to see that the Prothonotary Warblers were still around. I was not disappointed. This is on my list of top 10 favorites for sure.

I found three pairs of nesting Protonotary Warblers today. Here is a pic from the second one I found. This was a good day!

I was going to enter this photo in a competition titled "Emotion". But alas I had something else come up and I couldn't drop it off. This is a photo from the DVM graduation at MSU. The Commencement Speaker and Sparty celebrate the accomplishments of the Michigan State University Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Graduates.

This is an Infrared photograph converted to black and white. The water was crystal clear and you could see the bottom like you were looking through glass.

This is an Infra red photograph converted to black and white. It is a pic of a boat landing at Ocqueoc Lake. There was a 22 degree halo and sundog above it. The sundog is the bright spot in the sky.

I wasn't going to post these pictures but then I decided they were pretty good Michigan sunsets. So here it is! These pics were taken just west of the Hammond Bay Biological Station looking out over the bay.

This is a photograph of the sunset last night (May 26th) over Hammond Bay in Northern Michigan. Mercury is at top right, Jupiter at bottom left and Venus at bottom right.

This very unusual "frilly" flower is one of the first Northern Michigan bog plants to bloom in the spring. It is one of the very first flowers that I photographed back in the days of film.

Tucked away on a smidgeon of an island in an isolated Northern Michigan Lake, this Loon sits on a pair of eggs. Hopefully its "treasure" is safe and secure in this hidden and isolated location.

I finally found the Nodding Trillium at Harris Nature Center. It was in plain sight right next to the main trail. Isn't this a beautiful little flower?

This is an IR photograph of some very interesting cloud formations.

I have seen Red Headed Woodpeckers at back yard feeders but it has been years since I have seen one in the woods at a nesting site. What a beautiful bird!
