Welcome to My Michigan (The Mitten)
I took a fifteen year break from photography to spend as much time as possible with my family. Now that the kids are out of school and I find myself with more free time I have decided to join the digital age and pick up where I left off.
For me photography is a labor of love. It helps me see everything in a new light and a new way. Everyday events become forever memories. Insects, flowers, animals and birds become magical and mystical. My eyes see a whole new world around me, sometimes alien but always beautiful. This is what I love to do, winter, spring, summer and fall, immersed in the great out of doors with a camera in my hand.
Come and join me on my expeditions. And just maybe, like many others, you will come away "Smitten by the Mitten".
Thank you for stopping by.
Jim

WOW! I saw this one person submarine on one of my kayak adventures on an isolated lake up north. When I was a kid I dreamt of having something like this, only I think it was made out of cardboard. There were sea monsters, talking fish, pirate treasures and lost underground cities full of gems and gold.....

I have not been feeling well. I have a big bad kink in my upper back that just won't go away. It has kept me from taking very many pictures and from processing the ones I have taken (hard to sit at the computer for very long). While on vacation a week ago I was able to get in the kayak one time and took some photos of painted turtles that were posing for me. Here are a couple of them.

There was a short clip on the evening news tonight showing a "Fire Rainbow". Imagine that! This was what I photographed last Sunday and named it "Rainbow Cloud". The technical term for this phenomena is Circumhorizon Arc or Circumhorizontal Arc. "Fire Rainbow" is a flashier name that was coined by a journalist.
Sometimes you see something and you just can't believe that it is real. Well this is one of those times. I was driving West on Jolly Road and I glanced to the South to check out the "poofy clouds" that were starting to form. I almost drove off the road. I don't think I have ever seen anything more beautiful.

As the week draws to an end, I find myself reflecting on the past and looking to the future.

I found it very interesting that this morning dove appeared to be watching the sunset.

Yesterday there was another interesting conjunction, this time in the evening sky. Saturn is at the top, Spica is under Saturn and Mars is on the right (the bottom of the two bright objects on the right). The brightest object is the moon : ) This photo was taken at the MSU 4H Children's Garden.

Every year a family of Barred Owls spends their evenings in our back yard. It is so much fun to watch them and hear them calling to each other.

This has seemed like a long week. The hot weather is starting to wear on me. I am as happy as this Song Sparrow about having a couple of cooler days ahead. Yes, TGIF!

When ever I see cotton ball clouds backed by bright blue skies (I call it a poofy cloud day) I get an itch to take out the IR camera.

I sure do wish I knew where this drive goes to. I just can't see over the hill. Hmmmmm

The clouds are rolling in ahead of another cold front. I sure do hope this one brings rain. This photo was taken just south of Mt. Hope on the south campus of MSU.

Here is one of the sections of the Grand River where I go kayaking. On the left is Baldwin Park.

It was too cloudy to see any Northern Lights, if there were any, but the clouds rolled away just in time to get a good view of the Moon, Jupiter (top), Venus (bottom left) and Aldebaran (bottom right). This photo was taken along Okemos Rd. south of I96.
