Welcome to My Michigan (The Mitten)
I took a fifteen year break from photography to spend as much time as possible with my family. Now that the kids are out of school and I find myself with more free time I have decided to join the digital age and pick up where I left off.
For me photography is a labor of love. It helps me see everything in a new light and a new way. Everyday events become forever memories. Insects, flowers, animals and birds become magical and mystical. My eyes see a whole new world around me, sometimes alien but always beautiful. This is what I love to do, winter, spring, summer and fall, immersed in the great out of doors with a camera in my hand.
Come and join me on my expeditions. And just maybe, like many others, you will come away "Smitten by the Mitten".
Thank you for stopping by.
Jim

I saw this little guy lumbering across the field and couldn't resist. I could almost hear him mumbling "wish those damn paparazzi would leave me alone". "Brrrr, cold, cold, cold ......."

I saw my first Bluebird of the new year today. It was snowing so hard it looks like a watercolor painting.

This photo was taken through the car windshield so it isn't very crisp. But it is my first Lapland Longspur! It was in with a flock of Snow Buntings and Horned Larks.

Yesterday I got up early, threw the kayak on the car and headed south to the Grand River. I wasn't sure if there would be open water or not. I was disappointed to see that the river was frozen solid in Onondaga so I headed further upstream to Tompkins Road bridge. To my great delight the river was pretty free of ice. I had to chop through 2 to 3 inches of ice to open up the put in, but after that it was smooth sailing. I paddled 5 miles upstream to the Rives Eaton Road bridge and turned around. All in all I was on the river for 4 to 5 hours. Oh what a wonderful day. This is the last time I will be on the water in 2013. It was an excellent end to an excellent paddling year. Farewell 2013!

Brown Creeper's can be difficult to find when they are "creeping" around on trees looking for insects. They have no need to shop at Cabela's for camouflage gear.

I have been trying to capture the beauty of the ice covered trees. On Tuesday there was a short period of time when the dreary clouds parted to reveal a beautiful blue sky. That is when I took this photo of a sunlit treetop encased in ice.

There was a big ice storm last night. I decided to get out early and get some macro shots. Here are a couple that remind me of Christmas ornaments. More "Ice Art" photographs can be seen here.

This Carolina Wren has been visiting us off and on this week. We generally have one or two that come to the feeder all winter.

I thought I would try my luck with some night photography. I was very lucky to find a Barred Owl that was willing to pose for me. I learned one thing, it is very hard to focus in the dark! I wonder if this good friend is going to head south or stick around all winter? I hope he stays.

Absolutely amazing, this may be the best time lapse I have ever seen.
This friend never complains about anything, except maybe posing for a photo, and is up for any activity any time of the day.

Back to the MSU 4H Children's Garden and one of my favorites, the Monet Bridge.
